Healthier (both mentally and physically) than pining after his ex though, let's be honest. Plus the man enjoys mountain climbing with minimal equipment, so a significant part of the equation is probably that he is bored and taking on the Demi-Urge using minimal mana and moderate tech is probably the sort of challenge he enjoys. As for the Demi-Urge, vague hints as to things that are 'bad' is pretty much his thing, so warning a little ahead of time of possible interference by an extraplanar entity, i.e. Mt. Doom, would be somewhat logical. As for the number, just keep telling yourself that. You can quit using it anytime you want. It's not a problem or a fixation.

Yes, Sam and most really old beings get bored. Gods play with mortals/followers, but demons don't get that many worshipers, so they have to be content with torturing people or tormenting deities.
As you know, the Demi-Urge is sort of know for being a no-fun stick in the mud, and he does become quite the bore at times. Or so I am told.
Sam likes to go on adventures, try new things, Lilith? She drinks, broods, plots and schemes, as well as taking the occasional lover.
